Laal Dupatta is a soulful Hindi love song, and this is my fresh new version of it — sung together with Ashwani Machal. It is the kind of song that makes people smile the moment it starts, and we wanted to keep that feeling while giving it a new sound.
The original
The song is from Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, the 2004 romantic comedy directed by David Dhawan and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, with Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Priyanka Chopra. It released in cinemas on 30 July 2004, and the soundtrack came out on T-Series a couple of months earlier.
Laal Dupatta was sung by Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik, composed by Sajid–Wajid, with lyrics by Arun Bhairav. The film, set in Goa, was one of the biggest hits of 2004, and its album was among the year’s best-selling soundtracks — Laal Dupatta was one of the reasons why.
What the words mean
A laal dupatta is a red dupatta — the scarf or veil that, in so many Indian homes, is part of a bride’s outfit. The hook of the song, laal dupatta ud gaya re, means “the red dupatta has flown away”: a breeze lifts it, and with it goes the singer’s composure. It is a playful, flirtatious song about the first flutter of love, and the red of the dupatta carries all the colour of romance and weddings with it.
Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik were the voices of so many love songs of that era, and this duet has their easy, teasing chemistry in every line.
My version
On my version, Ashwani Machal and I sing it together. The music, mixing and mastering are by R3ZR, Prince Pratap directed the video, and the graphic design is by GK Poster. Kanika Joshi and Ashwani Machal appear in the video. It went up on my channel on 3 December 2023.
A duet only works when the two voices are really talking to each other, so we sang it as a conversation — one line asking, the other answering — just as the original does.
When to play it
This one is for love vibes, couple moments, late-night listening and Instagram reels. It also fits beautifully into a wedding playlist, somewhere between the sangeet dances and the slower songs.
If you enjoyed it, share it with someone who knows every word of the original, and tell me in the comments which 2000s duet we should sing next.
