Mujhe Haq Hai is a song about love and commitment — about two people promising themselves to each other — and my rendition of it is the most-watched wedding song on my channel, with more than four and a half lakh views. It beautifully captures the emotions of weddings, love and togetherness, and it is for brides, couples and every romantic heart.
The original
The song is from Vivah, directed by Sooraj R. Barjatya and released on 10 November 2006, with Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao in the lead. It is the first track on the soundtrack, sung by Udit Narayan and Shreya Ghoshal, with music and lyrics by Ravindra Jain.
Vivah is the story of Prem and Poonam — an arranged match, an engagement, and the gentle, old-fashioned romance that grows between them in the months before the wedding. It was one of the ten biggest Hindi films of 2006, and its songs became a part of Indian weddings for years afterwards.
What the words mean
Mujhe haq hai means “I have the right”. The song is built as a conversation: one voice claims the right to love, to be close, to belong to the other — and the answer comes back again and again, tumhe haq hai, “you have the right”. It is a promise exchanged line by line, which is why it feels so right for a couple standing together at the start of a new life.
Ravindra Jain wrote both the music and the words, and you can hear it: the melody never hurries, and every line has room to breathe. It is a song that trusts its own simplicity.
My version
I sang it, the music and the mixing and mastering are by R3zR, and Prince Pratap shot and edited the video. It went up on my channel on 11 April 2023.
Let this melody take you back to your own special moments of love, promises and forever — a mehendi evening, a varmala, or the quiet moment when you first said yes.
For your wedding
So many of you have told me you want to play this at a wedding, and I love that. It works beautifully for an entry, for the varmala, or simply playing softly while families meet. Because the song is a conversation, it also works as a duet at the sangeet — for the couple themselves, or for a brother and sister singing it together. If you use my version at a wedding, I would be so happy to hear about it.
Would you play this on your wedding day? Tell me in the comments.
